Supply of Ductile Iron Pipes and Fittings for the Silvertown Tunnel Project

The financing, design, construction, and 25-year operation project of the Silvertown Tunnel was awarded to the Ferrovial-BAM-SK Joint Venture in 2018. It consists of two twin tunnels, 1.4km in each direction, under the River Thames, east of London, built with the largest tunnel boring machine in UK history (11.8 m diameter) and will be the first road tunnel built under the Thames in the last 30 years. The highway is scheduled to open in March 2025.

CONSTRUTEC was awarded the supply of ductile iron pipes and fittings for the tunnel project being carried out by the RIVERLINX LTD consortium. The contracted ductile iron pipes, with diameters DN 150, DN 400, and DN 450, were manufactured according to the EN 598 standard for sanitation. Ductile iron pipe with TYTON-type joint with NBR rubber gasket, with high alumina cement internal lining and external protection based on Zn 200 g/m2 and red epoxy finish.

The ductile iron fittings were supplied with high alumina cement (HAC) and red epoxy finishes, as required by the project. Additionally, to avoid pipe cuts on site and improve pipe assembly efficiency, the tees were supplied in plain and socket formats.

The project required a very short delivery time for the ductile iron fittings, and the client’s expectations were met, allowing them to adhere to the project schedule.
